The Central Plains Capitals were shut out for the second straight game as they fell 1-0 to the Yellowhead Chiefs in the Manitoba Female Midget Hockey League Saturday afternoon in Shoal Lake.

It was a tough game for the Caps, who struggled early on to generate any offence.

"We're just still struggling a little bit getting out of our own end, which means you're not getting down to the other end as much and then we're just not taking the opportunity to get the puck to the net," says Coach Ferdi Nelissen. "We're trying to make one more play, one more play, and we had challenged the girls to shoot the puck more."

It was a scoreless first period even though the Caps did find the back of the net, but the goal was waved off. The referee lost sight of the puck and blew the whistle.

After the second period, the Chiefs scored to take a 1-0 lead and that was all the scoring that would take place, but not for a lack of trying.

Coach Nelissen says the girls buckled down on defence and put a lot of pressure on the opposing goaltender.

"We got more shots, more opportunities, and we got a little bit unlucky," says Nilessen. "(There were) a couple of bounces that went right by the posts. The girls competed right until the end. Their effort level was high, their compete level was high. We just didn't get a bounce."

He says goaltender Megan Beswitherick was solid in net keeping the team in the game early on.

The Capitals look to snap their six game losing streak Sunday when they head to Winnipeg to take on the Ice at St. James Civic Centre. Game time is 2pm.
