Catch some world class armwrestling today at Stride Place in Portage la Prairie.

Tournament Director Ryan Espey says it should be a good weekend for competitors, and spectators.

"The World Armwrestling League (WAL) is built to be a spectator friendly event, as far as the sport of armwrestling is concerned. The old set of rules would take a lot more time to setup (each match) and people really didn't know what was happening, plus the match would get stopped a lot for fouls and things like that. In the WAL, they have streamlined it all to make it more spectator friendly, and have way less halts in the action that's happening on the armwrestling table."

There's an Amateur and a Professional Class. Espey says even the amateurs could find their way to Vegas for the world championships.

"The amateurs can qualify and go on to regional championships, then on to Vegas in an amateur division. So there's the opportunity for people that might not be on the level of a pro yet, but they could still earn a way to enjoy a shot at Vegas and going to the big show. People can register for amateur or pro right up until 12:30 Saturday. So just before the event you can still register, but you have to do it online, and then come down and weigh in. You can use your phone to register it's that easy."

"Once all the registrations are in we hand them to our scorekeeper, who will start making up the draw sheets," adds Espey. "At 1 p.m. we'll do a quick rules clinic so all the experienced armwrestlers and new armwrestlers alike, can learn the specific rules of the WAL so there are no surprises for the tournament. Spectators can take that in too so they'll have a better overview of what's happening. At 2 p.m. we get underway and we stop when it's finished."

Espey adds there's going to be some real high-end armwrestling in town, and encourages people to come and check it out. The action starts at 2 p.m. at Stride Place.
