Portage community floods La Verendrye School with cereal donations
Portage community floods La Verendrye School with cereal donations When a school bus rolled into La Verendrye School in Portage la Prairie, it wasn’t filled with students — it was packed with boxes of cereal to support the division’s breakfast programs. Cori Asham, who helped unload the cargo, describes a scene she had never seen before: “This is unbelievable. I can’t. I can’t get over all the cereal on this bus. It’s wonderful to see. Cereal in all the seats, in the walkway; it’s full.” She says she had never witnessed so many visible donations arriving at a school. “This is unbelievable. We can’t thank the community enough. Like I was saying on Friday, the community always steps up. The food programs in the division; it’s so important for many of our students.” The donations will be distributed across district schools to support students who face food insecurity. Grade 6 student Lawrence Catcheway Jr. looked on as the boxes were unloaded and offered his impression. “There’s a lot of boxes. I’m not sure what’s going on, but all I can see is that there someone’s delivering food and cereal for kids at LVS,” says Catcheway. They usually only have like a few cereals at the breakfast program, but it’s still good, and I also eat some toast with it. You could get well-fed in the morning, and you could have all the cereal you like helps out in school, you think. Yep, it’s pretty pretty helpful. It feed kids, and it makes very good things for people who have limited options at home.” Younger students shared simpler preferences for their morning meals. “I like getting cereal in the morning, cuz I like Froot Loops,” says Mirabella Alia adds, “I like some cereal. I like Froot Loops.”
