The City of Portage la Prairie’s yard waste collection program is beginning this coming week.

Councillor Preston Meier says the city does offer free curbside pickup of yard waste for the next six collection cycles. However, they do have a few requests.

“All we ask is you put the yard waste on the curb on your regular collection date no later than 7 a.m.,” explains Meier. “As usual, there’s no limitation to the number of bags that can be placed out for collection but there is a weight restriction. So, we do ask that you keep them under that 40-pound weight limit.”

The City also asks citizens to place yard waste in a clear refuse bag or a compostable brown paper bag.

Meier outlines what can be included.

“It is only defined as leaves, grass, and garden waste,” says Meier. “It excludes any tree trimmings. Tree trimmings we ask you to bundle them in four-foot section and then you do have to have a waste collection tag affixed to those.”

Meier notes the tree disposal site is another option for the tree trimmings.
