Yesterday marked the 100th anniversary of women's right to vote in Manitoba. Portage City Councillor Melissa Draycott's glad for the many women who won the right.

"It's been a long time since that movement started. I, of course, am very positive. I'm happy that it went through many, many years ago, though I'm sure it was a lot of work, with many generations working through that. I think it's important that women have that right to vote. That, of course, led into women being able to make decisions for all levels of government."

She notes she wouldn't have her position on Council had it not been for the right.

"And if women couldn't vote, then women couldn't sit in politics in any way, shape or form."

Draycott adds voting's important for everyone.

"It's important for everybody to exercise their right to vote when it's your opportunity to vote. I think everybody, whether male or female, should. I think that's very important to us as Canadian citizens."
