A robbery took place Monday morning at a local dollar store involving an assault on store staff and a woman has been charged.

RCMP Sergeant Brian Brewer gives the details.

"At 10:20 hours -- 10:20 a.m. -- on September 9th, we got a report of a robbery at the dollar store here in Portage," explains Sgt. Brewer. "The Great Canadian Dollar Store. A female had attempted to shoplift some items."

He says she pushed staff when they confronted her, took their phone and smashed it, then fled the scene with a pair of sunglasses.

"The suspect who is a 32-year-old female had left," continues Sgt. Brewer. "But through surveillance cameras at the store, we were able to identify who she was, track her down and arrest her. She's now in custody facing charges of robbery, theft and assault."
