With nothing other than some stronger wind and a few flurries in the forecast Thursday, it wasn't expected to be that bad on Manitoba roads in the area. But as we all know, sometimes things can be very deceiving. As the wind picked up early in the afternoon, a sheet of ice began to form on Highway #1 in an area known to be slippery, between Elie and Oakville.

Shortly after noon, vehicles began sliding into the ditch, and calls for tows started flowing in. One listener reported seeing 6 different vehicles in the ditch at one point, a couple of them on their side.

The wind is epxected to gust as high as 60 km/h until Friday evening so icy conditions may persist. Expect some blowing and drifting snow as well which may reduce visibilities in open areas. No highways are closed in the region but you should plan to give yourself extra time to get where you are going. The RCMP reminds everyone that even though there are posted speed limits, driving to the conditions is the best way to avoid ending up sliding off the road or causing an accident.
