There's still a wee bit of work to do before kids will get to spend their days in the city's newest daycare.

A state-of-the-art facility is nearing completion in Portage, and those at Wee World Daycare can't wait to move in. Executive director Sidney Dubetz-Zacharias says they're currently in the process of moving the supplies in.

"It has to be all the windows," says Dubetz-Zacharias when asked about her favourite part of the building. "There is so much natural light. It's so warm and inviting."

The daycare, which was a collaborative effort between the City and Rural Municipality of Portage la Prairie, will be operated rent-free for 15 years.

"These opportunities don't come up very often and to have this opportunity to provide quality childcare and more spots for our town is something we're very proud of," notes Dubetz-Zacharias. "Being a part of this is an amazing opportunity that we're very grateful for."

The daycare will care for 74 children. Dubetz-Zacharias says they don't want to overwhelm anyone in the early days, and will add more spots once they're comfortable. She says her family got the chance to look around the building, and her kids love it.

"They think it's great," says Dubetz-Zacharias. "They already know all the different rooms and are helping to set up the furniture."

They hope to be running the daycare by early November.
