City Council met Monday night to discuss various topics, including a feasibility study that looked at a potential transit system for Portage la Prairie.

Council determined that the three options shown in the study were not financially feasible at this time. These included a fixed route system like a city bus, an on-demand system like a shuttle service, or a hybrid system which would be a combination of the two.

According to several councillors, an on-demand system would duplicate existing services in Portage, and they do not want to use taxpayer dollars in that way. That being said, this does not mean the idea of a transit system is dead. Council says they will continue to discuss several possibilities for a transit system in the future.

During the meeting, letters of support were read from various groups within the city, and Council agreed there appears to be a need for some sort of a transit system.

The next city council meeting is set for January 24.
