Yesterday saw Portage la Prairie take part in a long-standing tradition at Island Park -- the annual Terry Fox Run for cancer research. One of the participants was Mo McLeod, who's taken part each year.

Mo McLeod"I know a lot of people who are suffering with cancer," he says, "And ones who have passed on -- some of my own family members. And I made it a pledge of my own, and our family's, we come out every year, and have every year since the Terry Fox Run started."

Members of Central Plains Female Capitals hockey team were among them, and Coach Ferdi Nelissen outlines why they're involved.

"Something that touches everybody's lives," he says, "And to show support, and to teach the girls at a young age that giving back to the community, and doing that kind of stuff is the right thing to do, outside the fact that Lindsey Rutherford is one of their teammates, and her

Ferdi Nelissensister (Kailee) was affected by it."

Terry Fox Central Plains Coordinator Sherry Rutherford says being part of this is personal.

"Not only my parents both passed away from cancer," she says, "But a daughter that was diagnosed five years ago, that has fought, and is now a survivor. The money from these runs that goes to the research the Terry Fox Foundation does is phenomenal."

Heather MacKenzie's the Terry Fox Foundation Director for Manitoba and Saskatchewan, and is impressed with her first visit to the Portage event, noting she's heard about this city's support.

"It's well known here," she says, "People know that the Terry Fox Run is this weekend, and that doesn't even happen in smaller and bigger communities, so it's really heartwarming, actually."
