The Portage Terriers opened the MJHL Showcase at the Seven Oaks Rec Centre Monday afternoon with a 5-2 win over the Winkler Flyers. The annual event is designed to give scouts of all levels a chance to see the skill in the MJHL. All 11 teams play two games at the same facility over three days.

Portage opened the game strong scoring in the first five minutes. The puck came to Sheldin Howard in the slot and he buried it past Dorrin Luding. Winkler struggled to stay out of the penalty box but were able to keep the game 1-0 heading into the intermission.

It was a quick start to the second period for the Winkler Flyers. Sullivan Shortreed snapped it over the shoulder of Cole Johnston to tie the game. Special teams started to be a factor for the Terriers. Logan Christensen gave the Terriers the lead on the power play. He banged home a pass from Joey Moffatt. Riley Bruce then scored less than two minutes later, again with the man advantage. He made a nice move at the top of the right circle and snapped a shot under the cross bar. Bruce says their power play is something they have been working on.

The Terriers scored a third in a row minutes later. Tyler Lees finished off a two on one pass from Colby Wolter. The Flyers started to show signs of life and Jaden Townsend fired a shot top shelf off the rush to bring the score to 4-2 heading into the intermission.

Winkler came out flying to start the third period and started to pour on the pressure. Johnston played well as time wound down, and Portage was able to hang on for their fifth win of the season. He finished the night with 26 saves. Kolton Shindle scores the empty netter. Portage finished the night 2/5 on the power play and killed off all five penalties against.

Portage is back in action Tuesday afternoon at 3 pm against the Virden Oil Capitals.
