The St. Claude and Haywood Arena have been given a cash boost from the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame.

They received $10,000 from winning a contest.

Roger Philippe is the Secretary of the St. Claude and Haywood arena. He explains what they did.

"We applied for a community award for with the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame. Every year they have these awards," says Philippe. "2017 was our 50th anniversary of the St. Claude and Haywood arena, so we made an explanation in a video that we had done for our 50th anniversary of how the arena had been built and all the work that went into it over the 50 years."

He says the money will be put towards upgrading the rinks' boards.

"It costs a lot more than $10,000, but it's going to help a lot. It's going to help us redo all of our boards which were needed to be done. It's going to be a lot better for kids. The new boards are lower, and they're easier for the bigger players to jump over the boards and for the kids to see over the boards."

There's going to be an official cheque presentation on January 19th during their annual Carnival Weekend.

Philippe says they were ecstatic to receive the funding.

"It shows that we have a community that has a lot of volunteers that do a lot of good work because that was a big part of the video we sent them," says Philippe. "It show's they appreciated, and we'll put that $10,000 towards community help to get us, new boards. It made us very happy that we were acknowledged in that way."
