For at least the past ten years now, Lighthouse Christian School in Southport has been running their annual schmockey game. They played yesterday, and administrator Alfred MacLaren describes the game.

Alfred MacLaren & Canuck, school mascot"Schmockey is our annual hockey event where the students play against the staff and parents. The students have the privilege of using the hockey sticks, whereas parents and staff have to be innovative and use such things as tennis rackets, brooms, garbage can lids, swiffers, you name it, to chase the hockey puck. Each year we play this event in our parking lot out behind our complex in Southport."

"Oh heavens, yes. I wouldn't miss it for anything. I'm just going to be on the team this year. I'm not the goalie.

Head Supervisor Iris Blume outlines what few rules are involved.

Iris Blume"The rules for schmockey are actually quite simple. For the students they have to use hockey sticks, and pretty much follow hockey rules as best they can. We don't make a limit to how many players can be out there at a time. However they want to play it is fine. Basically, for the parents and the staff, there's no rules. The only rule is they're not allowed to use hockey sticks. Anything goes in this game. We've got plungers, shovels, home-made concoctions with broom handles, dust busters, and it's lots of fun. The kids enjoy it every year."

The score in this year's game was 16-3 for the students!
