Sam Huston of the Portage Terriers has won the Joe Sponarski Memorial Trophy as the team's most valuable player in the postseason.

The defenceman had seven goals and six assists in 15 postseason games.

He says he cannot take all of the credit.

"I think confidence is a big thing, but you have to look at who I was playing with and how I scored all those goals," says Huston. "It was on our power play, so (there are) a lot of things that go into it. Guys in front of the net, great passes and stuff. It was me always getting the puck and whatnot. I made good opportunity of it, but I couldn't have done it without my teammates for sure."

Five of his seven goals came with the extra man advantage.

He says the city welcomed him with open arms when he came in from out west earlier this season.

"There was a buzz around the whole city when it comes to playoff hockey," says Huston. "It was just really nice being able to come back from where I was and join this group, and just go on this run. It was really fun and it was awesome."

Huston had been playing with the Kootenary Ice in the WHL, before being released back to the Terriers. At the time, Huston said he had heard it was a rebuilding year for the Terriers.

That turned out not to be the case.

"As soon as I got into the room, and saw how close we were and how everyone just gelled together, I knew there was something special instantly."

He says he hopes to be back with the team again next season, as they host the National Junior A Hockey Championship.
