The Portage la Prairie Rotary Club's annual book sale started yesterday at the Portage Mall, and continues until tomorrow.

It's one of the club's longest running fundraising events, with proceeds directed to a number of causes.

While it's not their largest event, Rotary member Jim Brands calls it one of the most fun.

"I've talked to a lot of the members, and we have a lot of fun doing it," he says, "We get to meet a lot of very nice people. We have a lot of, I guess we would call them, regular customers. I'm really quite surprised at how many people will carry in 40 books, and buy four, and away they go, and we'll see them two or three times over the course of the sale."

Brands isn't sure why the book sale remains successful in the digital age.

"Because I've wondered how long we can go on with this," he says, "But people who like to read still like to hold a book. I have a very good friend that always has three books on the go, at the same time. And I've asked her, because they will spend some time down south in the winter time, and I'll see her with her electronics. That's for the beach, that's not for home. When she's home, and relaxing, she wants to have a book in her hands."

If that sounds like you, the book sale's on today at the mall, from 1 until 7, and tomorrow between 10 and 5 o'clock.
