RCMP are warning all potential home renters to beware of scammers.

Areas surrounding Portage have seen an increase in rental scams recently. Constable Crystal Perry says the increase has yet to hit Portage, but people should still be on the lookout. She outlines some of the signs you could get scammed.

"Take a look at the rental amount," says Perry. "Is it lower than other similar places? If it that's definitely a red flag there. If you're asked to leave a deposit without any formal agreement or lease in place. If you're asked to send money through the internet to someone outside of the country. Absolutely beware of any of those red flags."

Perry also describes some of the ways to prevent getting scammed.

"You can go to the address," says Perry. "Make sure the listing is truthful and accurate. Compare the photos, if you are able to go in person to the house, make sure you take a look to compare these to see if they're the actual images. Schedule a showing, to confirm that the landlord will be present and that the house is one in the same as it has been listed in the listing."

Perry notes the most important thing is to ask to see a contract before transferring any funds. If they are unwilling to present you with one, that is a giant red flag.
