The Portage and Area Refugee Coalition is ready for two Syrian refugee families to arrive in Portage la Prairie.

Refugee Coalition Member John Dolloff says people in the community have really stepped up and made a difference.

"It feels absolutely wonderful. When we first came to Portage, the sign on the outskirts of the city talks about the city of possibilities -- and for me -- this support we've had really shows that's the reality for Portage la Prairie. So it's been wonderful."

Dolloff says it's all been happening really fast, and everyone was a bit flustered at first.

"When we first heard these two families were coming -- there was a great deal of sort of panic -- and we were really pleased to find that we were able to find houses. Even more overjoyed to find out that we had most of what we need to furnish them and make sure they're suitable for the families. So it's been really good."

Two homes are ready for the Syrian refugee families, and they have almost enough to furnish both, according to Dolloff. He doesn't have a timeline for when the families will be arriving, but says it could be any day.
