While the recent rainfall was a welcome site for farmers, some say that it's too little, and definitely too late.

Crop farmer Jim Murray says the situation hasn't really changed due to the rain that his fields received, as it's simply been too long. He explains that it would be so much more stressful if he was a younger farmer.

"I'm getting up in years, and for a young farmer it's completely devastating," notes Murray. "It's not looking good for these young producers."

He adds for his farm to really see a difference, he would need about a foot of rainfall. He says he's helped out with digging five dugouts for people who are entirely out of water.

Dave Shott, who's also a crop farmer, adds some of his fields got a little more rain than others, and notes there's a vast difference between them. He says a massive issue that hasn't been getting talked about as much is that bugs have been eating a portion of the few good crops.

"Anything from flea beetles in the spring with the canola and then the grasshoppers have been especially ferocious," explains Shott. "They're basically sucking whatever is left out of the crops now and guys are kind of wondering what to even do about it."

He adds there's still a chance to salvage something positive from this year, as his soybeans have done surprisingly well through the drought.

Theresa Zuk, a cattle farmer, had a slightly different view on the recent drought but it came back to the same conclusion as the others. She says while the rain was nice, and will give them a couple weeks of extra grazing, this year has been absolutely horrible.

"This has hands down been most difficult year in a decade," explains Zuk. "Years ago we were faced with the complete opposite as we got too much rain, but this year, management has been intense."

She adds she's looking for extra feed in order to get through the winter, as they just simply won't have enough. All three farmers are facing different challenges, whether it's harvesting or gathering feed and supplies for next year, but they all stemmed from the same place.

This year has been one of the worst years in agriculture due to the drought.
