The following is a summary of police activity in the Central Plains Area (Portage la Prairie, Treherne, Amaranth and the surrounding Rural Municipalities). The reporting dates are between 2017-10-09 and 2017-10-15. During this time period police responded to 286 calls for service.


STOLEN VEHICLES

Portage la Prairie RCMP are asking for the assistance of the community in locating several stolen vehicles across the Central Plains area. In the first incident, three ATV’s were stolen from a rural residence in the RM of North Norfolk: a yellow 2010 Can Am Outlander, an orange 2014 Polaris RZR, and a black 2017 Polaris RZR. In the second incident, a grey 2009 GMC Sierra, last seen with Manitoba license plate CDN 304, was stolen also from the RM of North Norfolk. The third incident saw a grey 2004 Chevrolet Duramax Silverado, last seen with Manitoba license plate EZH 715, stolen from the MacGregor area. Lastly, a black 2003 Polaris Sportsman 700cc, last seen with Manitoba license plate 7G773, was stolen from a residence in the RM of Westlake-Gladstone. It is unknown if these thefts are related, but investigators are asking that anyone with knowledge of who committed these thefts, or where the vehicles can be located, please contact the Portage la Prairie RCMP at 204-857-4445.


TWO VEHICLE COLLISION

At 7:30 PM the Treherne RCMP and local emergency services responded to a two vehicle collision on Hwy 2 at Road 34 W, near Haywood. Initial reports indicated that a car had struck a truck which was being pulled by a tractor. When officers arrived on scene two people were outside of one vehicle, but one was still stuck inside the other. Rescuers were able to extract the motorist, who was transported to hospital for treatment to non-life threatening injuries. The matter is still under investigation at this time, with charges pending.


SEMI & TRAILER ROLLOVER

Shortly before 6:30 AM emergency crews were called to the area of Hwy 26 and Road 25 W in the RM of Portage la Prairie for a semi-truck and trailer which rolled onto its side. Emergency crews arrived on scene to ensure that there were no serious injuries or hazards. Luckily there were neither, and the initial investigation suggests that there was a mechanical failure which caused the collision. No charges are pending in this matter.


SPEEDING

A motorist was observed travelling at 163 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on Hwy 1 in the RM of Portage la Prairie. The male driver (26 years old) was issued a fine in the amount of $875.25, as well as a notice of serious offence which will put him before the court to speak to his actions behind the wheel.


ARMED ROBBERY

At 5:43 AM the Portage la Prairie RCMP were called to an armed robbery at the Tim Horton’s location at 550 Saskatchewan Avenue E. A female suspect, armed with a knife, entered the restaurant and went behind the counter, demanding cash from the employees. The suspect fled the scene in a silver Nissan Rogue with no license plates. The suspect was described as an Indigenous female, wearing a black jacket over a grey hooded sweater, blue jeans, sunglasses, a ball cap and gloves. The suspect was also wearing bright blue running shoes. Investigators are asking that anyone with knowledge of who is responsible for this crime to contact the Portage la Prairie RCMP at 204-857-4445, or your local police detachment.


IMPAIRED DRIVING

Shortly after 2:00 AM, while patrolling the area around the Midtown Motor Inn, Portage la Prairie RCMP observed a vehicle being driven with no active registration. Once in contact with the male driver (27 years old) they determined that he was displaying several signs of impairment. The driver was arrested for impaired operation of a motor vehicle, and his subsequent breath samples were nearly double the legal limit. The driver was released from police custody that same day, set to appear before the court at a later date. His driver’s license was suspended for a minimum of 3 months, and the vehicle was towed and impounded for a minimum of 30 days at the owner’s expense.


SINGLE VEHICLE COLLISION

At 11:30 AM the Treherne RCMP were dispatched to a single vehicle collision on Hwy 240 in near St. Claude. Officers learned of the incident only after the driver of the vehicle was admitted to hospital with the assistance of a passing motorist. Investigators do not believe that there was any offence committed in the incident, and that no charges are pending at this time. Police wish to thank anyone who lent assistance to this motorist.
