The Portage la Prairie RCMP continues to offer tips to help prevent crime in the city and the surrounding area.
Inspector Paul Peddle says our four-legged friends can be a great help in keeping your home safe.
"Individuals that have dogs in their home, it's a big deterrent," says Peddle. "People get that 'scare factor' when they hear a dog bark and we notice that, a lot of the times, we see signs up in people's windows that say 'beware of dog.'"
He says putting up a 'beware of dog' sign is a simple step to help keep criminals away.
"That's a deterrent for a trespasser in the area that may be presented with that opportunity to go into your house," says Peddle. "When they hear a dog barking, or they see that sign, it definitely is something that will keep them away."
The RCMP will have a new tip online later today that focuses on a part of your home you may forget to keep locked.
