Manitoba Pharmacists have voted in favor of new regulations that will allow them to write prescriptions for minor ailments, rashes and infections.

The idea is to better utilize the health care providers in the system and add to their knowledge and abilities.

Rhonda Kitchen, Pharmacist at Hills Drug Store, says this will save time for many patients and the health care system in general. She notes for items to go through on an insurance plan, they need to go through as a prescription.

Patients who need to go to a doctor for blood glucose monitors, test strips, and over the counter products will now be allowed to process the prescription at the pharmacy which is convenient and efficient.

The province expects the changes to be implemented in 2011, but not all Pharmaceutical staff will be involved.
