The Kinew government in Manitoba is responding to loud and clear calls from municipalities throughout the province that public safety is a top priority.

In a press conference held in Brandon last week, Premier Wab Kinew stated that his government is committed to ensuring that law enforcement has the right resources to do their important work.

"We're also going to stand up an additional layer of response to help respond to mental health calls," says Kinew. "In the broader context, we want to make those investments in communities around prevention, whether that's recreational opportunities for young people or responding to addictions needs in the community."

He explains he is aware that the status quo efforts has not worked over the past eight years, noting it's time for a comprehensive approach that at once is tough on crime, but also tough on the causes of crime.

Kinew notes the timeline includes some early announcements in the near future concerning support for law enforcement.

"As we move ahead into 2024, you'll hear some of the broader community-based initiatives being rolled out there," adds Kinew.
