Roughly 1300 athletes are in Brandon this week for the Special Olympics Canada 2006 Summer Games.

They're joined by coaches and mission staff, including Portage la Prairie's Brian McCorrister. He'll act as Sports Manager for soccer and five pin bowling.

McCorrister's also coached, and has been involved for 26 years. It's something he enjoys doing, especially seeing athletes do well, progressing to national, international, and Paralympic competitions.

McCorrister's duties include ensuring the rules are being followed and allowing coaches time for breaks.

He believes Special Olympics' importance goes beyond the sport itself, giving participants experience they can use throughout their lives.

The event starts today, ending on Saturday.
