The Portage School Division talked about enrollment numbers at their last meeting.

September saw a total of 3,482 students. That's up 58 from June 2019, and 12 from last year.

"Our enrollment is healthy, so we've seen good numbers in all of our schools," says Todd Cuddington, the Superintendent of the Portage la Prairie School Division. "We're hoping to see that continue. We're actively working with our board and our administrators to make sure as enrollment increases, we have spaces available."

Cuddington outlines the trend of enrollment over the years.

"With the industrial growth that's anticipated in the community, we see it's likely to go higher," says Cuddington. "If you look at the 25-year average, our enrollment back to 1995 was around the average of 3,575. We're just right on the cusp of 3,500 this year."

It's important to track enrollment in September because that number is added into how much funding the division gets. Cuddington says the growth is a good thing.

"It's exciting. I think there's a lot of optimism in the community that we're going to see numbers increase as people move and settle into the community."
