The Portage la Prairie School Division (PLPSD) discussed Inclusive Education Month at Tuesday's school board meeting.

Manitoba's Minister of Education, Nello Altomare, proclaimed February 2024 as Manitoba Inclusive Education Month, a recognition that the division isn't taking lightly, according to Rochelle Rands, the Director of Student Services for the division.

"In his (Altomare's) letter to school divisions, he shared that as a province, we will continue to work collaboratively with families and communities to foster the philosophy of inclusion so that all children are prepared to succeed to reach their full potential and to live the good life."

Rands notes that in the division, teachers and staff continue to meet the changing needs of students.

"We are proud of the many programs, services and initiatives we offer in the division to help level the playing field for all. We have a strong student services team who works with classroom teachers to provide opportunities for all learners and help create a sense of personal belonging and achievement."

According to Rands, staff-organized student programming continues to ensure that all students feel part of the school community.

"Our community always plays a huge role in supporting inclusion in schools. We rely on our community to help support schools in many different ways. And we're always appreciative of the response. Thank you, community, for recognizing the importance of education for all."

Rands pointed out that the "Yes I Can Awards, " which will be held at the end of February, are a great example of inclusive education because they highlight students' accomplishments.

"There's much to celebrate this month as we acknowledge all that we currently do to foster inclusive beliefs and practices in our schools. Student voice continues to be a priority because we all know it is our youth who will make the difference and help create the change we all want to see."

Rands notes that the division acknowledges the good with the bad, as it will continue to improve attendance rates. She added that the division knows attendance directly correlates with academic achievement.
