The 106th anniversary of Vimy Ridge and the events that took place that day was honoured on Thursday afternoon in Portage la Prairie.

The city made a proclamation at City Hall to recognize the day when Canadians fought from coast-to-coast against one common enemy.

Bob Olford, the past President of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 65, talks about the battle which defined Canada as a nation.

"On that day in Vimy Ridge, when other regiments and other countries were not able to keep and hold that hill. We were able to take it as Canadians and have it in our possession and hold it for the allies. it defined us as a country willing to stand for what was right."

Oldford adds that at 2 p.m. on Sunday, the Legion will be holding a service at the downtown cenotaph to pay tribute to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice in 1917.
