A Portage la Prairie RCMP officer was on patrol last Saturday on Oak Bay when she observed a woman acting erratically in the street and possessing a crowbar.

At 12:50 a.m., the officer exited her patrol vehicle and attempted to speak with the woman who took off on foot. The suspect was pursued with additional officers attending to assist, according to Police. The foot pursuit led the suspect and officers to a property where she attempted to jump over a fence to avoid capture.

As an officer attempted to gain control of the suspect physically, she turned and raised the crowbar towards him. The RCMP says it was at that point they used a conducted Energy Weapon on the suspect. She was arrested and taken into police custody without further incident.

The 18-year-old woman from Portage la Prairie was held in custody overnight and released the following morning for a court appearance scheduled for December 5 in Portage.

She faces charges of Assaulting a Police Officer, Resisting Arrest and Possession of a Weapon for Dangerous Purposes.

No injuries were reported in this incident and the Portage la Prairie RCMP continue to investigate.
