Portage la Prairie turned 116 years old today, February 13th, and our newest mayor is happy to celebrate with the city.

Mayor Sharilyn Knox says that it's important that citizens take a moment to recognize this milestone, which dates back to 1907.

She highlights that the city will be celebrating the birthday this evening at Winterfest with cake, tea and other refreshments from around the world.

"I think that represents sort of the change in our population, and we have a lot of newcomers and different cultures within our city, and I think it's great to celebrate that."

The mayor notes that there will also be a City Council meeting tonight, where they touch more on the birthday.

"I would really say, and I get a lot of comments from citizens of just what they've seen happening in the last ten years that they see a whole lot of progress."
