Three separate calls had local firefighters headed to the fields Monday night in the Portage area.

The first one came in around 6:30 pm and saw two units respond to a grass fire just north of Hwy #1 on Road 26 just east of Portage. Crews doused the flames and remained on the scene for approximately 2 1/2 hours to be sure the fire would not start up again.

The next call came in around 8 p.m. and crews were dispatched to a tractor on fire on Road 68 NW of Portage. This fire was quickly extinguished and no one was injured. As crews were putting equipment back into service they were then dispatched to a grass/power pole fire. Two trucks responded and again the fire was quickly put out.

The fire department is urging everyone to use caution when burning as the ground cover is extremely dry in our area.
