A new fund has been launched by the province to help children exposed to domestic violence.

It's called "At The Roots", and means five agencies share in $175,000.00.

One of those is the Portage Family Abuse Prevention Centre, and Executive Director Penny Kelly is pleased. She notes they're the only shelter to receive money, which makes her proud. Some other recipients are children's organizations, which don't provide diverse prevention services.

Kelly's earmarked their funding for direct service to children, through programs for those who've grown up with violence between their parents.

She credits Family Services Minister Gord MacKintosh for launching the program because it can often take a long time for prevention initiatives to show results. Kelly realizes that can make it difficult to obtain votes at election time.
