The G7 Economic Summit is under way just outside Quebec City, and the event has a Portage la Prairie connection.

Digital artist Carmen Hathaway’s “Deeper Still” is part of an exhibit of indigenous art at the G7 International Media Centre. She tells us how it came about.

“I’ve been represented by Sacred Fire Productions at their Ashukan Cultural Space Gallery in Montreal for several years,” she says, “I’m a member of the Abenaki First Nation, Odanak, Quebec. Earlier this year, Ashukan Director Cécile Bond invited me to join the group of artists representing the eleven first nations of Quebec. I’m honoured to be part of this exhibit.”

“Deeper Still” was part of a solo exhibit at Montreal’s Ashukan Cultural Space, and Hathaway explains its significance.

“I created it as part of my 2017 Ashukan solo exhibit ‘From Smoke To Cyber Signals’ print series,” she says, “As a new media/digital artist, I develop narratives based in my experience of the evolution of the technologies of our time. This piece speaks to the concept of AI – artificial intelligence – where it is now, and where it is yet to be.”
