The Portage la Prairie School Board met last night to discuss some things before Spring Break.

The Pan-Canadian Assessment Program (PCAP) was one of the topics outlined during the meeting. Assistant Superintendent Mike Mauws explains the program.

"(PCAP) is an assessment program that's used across Canada with Grade 8 students. It basically looks at 3 core subject areas reading, mathematics and science. This particular assessment started in 2003, so 2016 is the 4th year of the PCAP Assessment."

Mauws says it's doesn't apply to every Grade 8 class.

"Not all Grade 8 students across the country, or the province participate in the particular assessment. We have one school, the Grade 8 students at Ecole Arthur Meighen will be taking part in this assessment. Sometime between April 25 and May 20th, and the training for the teacher that will be part of this particular assessment has occurred."

Mauws says it does help at the Provincial level.

"It's more of a provincial data, than it is school division or school data. So it's certainly something the province looks at in terms of putting emphasis perhaps more in numeracy or literacy depending on how those results look."

The (PCAP) will be taking place sometime between April 25th and May 20th, and the class' teacher has already undergone training.
