One of the City's most recognizable groups will have a new president leading the charge.

The Rotary Club of Portage la Prairie held their executive changeover meeting on June 27th. Jennifer Campbell Dornan, who was the president of the club for the past two years, has handed the reins to Sherri Palmer. Palmer says one of the things she wants to focus on during her time as president is increasing the number of members.

"Having a strong active membership is always a strength of a service club," notes Palmer. "We've got something that I think other people will enjoy. Lots of service clubs have struggled over the last number of years in maintaining their memberships. I think this group has been able to maintain some momentum and there's a lot of things that wouldn't happen in this community without Rotary."

Palmer adds she was very impressed with the club throughout this past fiscal year, which officially ends on June 30th. Moving ahead, Palmer notes the club will be continuing the work they've been doing, including the duck pond rejuvenation project, donations toward the skateboard park, the Canada Day pancake breakfast, and more.

Palmer has been a Rotarian for roughly eight years prior to her becoming president.

"I got involved because I had an invitation to come out to the club," explains Palmer. "My son was also an outbound exchange student, and I thought I had an obligation to support a club that had given him such an opportunity."

She says, while she was invited, that's not a requirement, and hopes to hear from many potential Rotarians throughout her presidency.

"I've met people that I wouldn't have known otherwise and got to be involved in things that were really good for Portage. I love it."
