Fundraising's under way for new playground structures at the Arborg Early Middle School.

It doubles as a community facility, and Principal Brad Harding says the new equipment's needed because a daycare centre was built on the school grounds last year, and they use the equipment as well.

"Because they came here, we had to remove some of our play structures. And we thought we'd be able to move them, but once they came out of the ground, they were old and obsolete, and couldn't be put back in. So last year with the School Board, and our Parent Advisory Council, and community support, we were able to raise enough money to put some new equipment on the early years side of our playground. And now, this year, our Parent Advisory Council and the school are looking to revitalize our middle years playground."

The cost of replacing it is around $40,000. Harding notes $8000 is already in place from the Parent Advisory Council.

"We've also applied for grants with Community Places, Community Futures, Noventis Credit Union, Hometown Manitoba, and also we have a school-age daycare that takes place at our school. They donated $1000 last year -- they've donated another $1000 this year. Vidir Machine, a local company, donated $2500 to our last project. We're looking for community members to help us out as well."

The school approached Town Council for a letter of support, and for a $5000 matching contribution to trigger a grant they've been awarded. Deputy Reeve Rob Thorsteinson notes following their presentation, he's confident Council will approve both.
