Fogging for mosquitoes in the City of Portage la Prairie is slated to take place this week for the first time in three years.

Superintendent of Public Works Brian Taylor explains due to the recent rains and results from their larviciding program and trap counts, the city has decided to start their fogging program, which uses Deltamethrin, this Wednesday and Thursday, weather permitting.

Fogging on Wednesday night is scheduled to take place between 9:30 p.m. and 6 a.m., and will cover all areas south of the tracks, not including Koko Platz, Mellenville and Old Bridge Road. Meanwhile, Thursday night's fogging is set to cover all remaining areas of town.

Should the conditions be unfavourable, the fogging schedule will be pushed back by a day.

Taylor notes they are unable to go forward with mosquito fogging if wind speeds surpass 12 km/h. He says if they are unable to spray on schedule, there are some things the public can do in the meantime if they're being pestered. This includes reducing standing water collecting in your yard, utilizing mosquito repellant, minimizing the amount of time spent outdoors between dusk and dawn, ensuring your window screens to not have holes and wearing light-coloured, loose-fitting, long-sleeved clothing.

If you have a concern regarding mosquito fogging, or do not want your property to be fogged, Taylor says you can call Public Works at 204-239-8346 and request to be put on the "no-fog" list.
