A rainy day couldn’t keep the dogs and cats at PAWS away!

The Portage Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) held a fundraiser in McMunn & Yates on April 29th during the business’ 52nd anniversary barbecue. Cat coordinator Judy Hughes says she was elated by the turnout, despite the gloomy circumstances outside.

“We were concerned that we'd be outside, but they had such a fabulous set up here,” explains Hughes. “They had tables and chairs, and it’s just marvelous. We're so appreciative of the support we get from the Portage community, it's just wonderful.”

She adds people were donating money, but also pet toys and dog food, which was all greatly appreciated. While those at the barbecue weren’t able to simply walk out with a new pet, they were able to meet some of the cats and dogs available for adoption and take the first steps toward ownership.

“The thing is to come and visit first, explain the situation, what kind of a home environment, what other pets they have,” mentions Hughes. “There’s an application form to fill out with reference checks and explaining that if you rent your place, you need landlord permission. Once all that is done, which doesn't usually take very long at all, then they come and sign a contract saying that they will keep up to date with the shots and things like that.”

Store manager at McMunn & Yates Natasha Ralph says they looked forward to showing off some of the pets that PAWS currently has up for adoption. She echos Hughes’ sentiment regarding the Portage community showing up through rain or shine.

“We're blown away by the turn out,” notes Ralph. “(By 11 a.m.) we're already running for more food. Like we can't thank the community enough for coming out to support this and also to celebrate our 52 years in business as well.”

McMunn & Yates will be holding another barbecue along with a Motorcycle Show and Shine this coming Saturday, May 6th as they raise funds for the Army Navy Airforce Veterans and the Portage Legion Branch #65.
