A man from the Rural Municipality of Portage la Prairie along with two others from Winnipeg has been arrested following an assault with a firearm in Grand Marais.

Selkirk RCMP says on July 1st, around 12:20 p.m., they received the call detailing the assault happening at a business on Parkview Avenue.

The group of criminals attended the business, assaulted an employee, then threatened him and others with a firearm. The suspects then fled from the scene at high speeds and crashed into a nearby ditch.

After the accident, they threatened a witness until a second vehicle showed up, which picked up the suspects and fled toward Winnipeg.

Officers tried to initiate a traffic stop but the vehicle kept driving at high speeds into Winnipeg. The Winnipeg Police Service was notified and located them, with the help of Air-1, in the Maples area of the city.

The employee of the business, a 51-year-old man from Grand Marais, is currently in the hospital with serious injuries. The bystander from the collision, a 46-year-old male from the RM of Bifrost, suffered minor injuries. 

Ethan Jones, 24, from the RM of Portage la Prairie, has been charged with:

  • Aggravated Assault
  • Pointing a Firearm x2
  • Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm
  • Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose
  • Uttering Threats x2
  • Carrying a Weapon- in Public
  • Carrying a Concealed Weapon
  • Flight from Police Officer
  • Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle
  • Operation of a Motor Vehicle While Prohibited
  • Operation of a Motor Vehicle While Impaired

A 22-year-old male from Winnipeg is facing charges of Aggravated Assault and Assault Causing Bodily Harm. A 24-year-old male also from Winnipeg is facing a charge of Aggravated Assault.

Both were released on conditions and are scheduled to appear in court in Selkirk on September 16, 2022.

A 20-year-old female from the RM of Hanover is facing charges under the Highway Traffic Act of Drive Carelessly and Permitting an Unauthorized Person to Drive.

The Selkirk RCMP is continuing to investigate the situation.
