A Portage volunteer has received some recognition for working with over six non-profit organizations. Kris Bowman was one of the recipients of the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee medallion in Carman last week.

"I've done a lot of volunteer work over the years, from Douglas Campbell Lodge to Portage District General Hospital. Most recently, with the Royal Canadian Legion, up until the pandemic started, I've always been in a service role; I did nine years with the Canadian Armed Forces. From there, I've been with corrections for almost 15 years, and I am a crisis negotiator for the province."

Bowman says being among some outstanding citizens from surrounding communities was a pretty surreal experience.

"I was very humbled looking at some of the people with whom I was awarded the award, and there were many people with 35 years of volunteer work in different organizations. Looking at the caliber of the people who received the award was very humbling. "

He also notes that if you are on the fence about volunteering, just get out there and do it.

"It's very rewarding. Whatever organization you help out with, Portage Bear Clan is doing great stuff right now. The Portage Rotary is doing great stuff. Put your name out there and get to work."

Bowman says that he will be forever thankful for receiving this award and is excited to see what the world has in store for him.
