Four homes in Dakota Plains First Nation were destroyed by fire Wednesday, and one house miraculously saw the fire sweep around it, sparing it from the devastation. Donna Ajie lives there, and explains what happened.

"There was a fire the other day at the dump," says Ajie. "They did put it out. So, we thought, everything was fine. We were all busy in town. We came back, and my daughter said the fire's coming close. We all came home quickly and my dad said it's really close. We need to find somebody. I have no numbers, so I got hold of my cousin and said, 'Can you phone somebody?' "

She says she asked friends to call the fire department in Long Plain and also asked friends on Facebook to help out. By the time she returned with her family, the fire was too close for them to handle it on their own. Ajie says it's common for them to deal with this sort of thing, but this time it was too much.

Ajie adds she's happy the Fire Department from Long Plain, the RCMP, DOPS and MacGregor Fire Department helped them out.
