The Portage Lions Club has quietly worked behind the scenes to keep Portage looking great, but now they also want to fix up some of the seats.

Alan Walker, member of the club, says they've already repaired five benches in the city to keep the city looking nice. He says it's been a bit of a slower project, as they started working on it last year.

"We decided that we would like to refurbish some of the memorial benches along Crescent Road," explains Walker. "What it entailed was basically removing the boards from the benches, re-staining them, and then re-installing them back on the benches themselves."

He adds the club wanted the path along Crescent Road to be nice to look at while improving comfortability, so fixing the benches was an easy call to make. He says if anybody sees a bench that looks to be in particularly rough shape, they can reach out to the club and they'll get to work.

Walker hopes to see the number of members increase because they've had to pause some of their other projects due to declining numbers since the COVID-19 pandemic.

"We used to have an auction where we would raise money for the community," notes Walker. "We also had what they call the one-in-a-minion project. Somebody would nominate a person and we would happily set out a little minion for a week just to let the community know that person was involved in the community and does quite a bit for them."
