The Portage RCMP detachment is part of the team investigating a firearms theft earlier this month in Treherne.

30 to 40 rifles and shotguns were stolen from two residences on February 9th.

"D" Division Staff Sergeant Steve Saunders can't talk about possible suspects because it could jeopardize the investigation. He notes several units are working on the case, including Portage's plainclothes unit, which is the clearing house for intelligence.

The major crimes units from Winnipeg and Brandon are also taking part.

Saunders says they haven't determined a motive behind the thefts, especially if they're bound for the black market.

He adds some of the weapons are registered and some are not.
