A sky-watcher in Steinbach says there is a special spectacle in the skies these days. Ken McAllister says it's something that has not happened for 11 years.

"There are five planets that we can see with our naked eye. In the next couple of weeks, you will be able to see all five on them at one time. This is going to be happening in the early morning, right before sunrise. Venus is the brightest of them and then the second-brightest is Jupiter and then the other other three that are less bright are Mars, Saturn and Mercury."

McAllister says the five planets can be seen in the southern sky with Mercury in the far southeast, Jupiter in the west southwest and the others in between. He adds the time of day to see all five planets is between 7 a.m. and sunrise.

"What's going to happen too, which is kind of cool, is the moon as actually going to progress from Jupiter to Mercury, so the moon will actually cross the paths of all these planets. So it's going to be very interesting to see. On the 27th (January), the moon will be on one side of Jupiter. On the 28th the moon will be on the other side of Jupiter. The moon will get real close to Mars on February 1st and then the moon will be real close to Saturn on February 3rd and then the moon will be real close to Venus on February 6th."
