Portage's high school drivers ed instructor supports Manitoba Public Insurance's move to tighten the program.

Mick Cochrane explains statistics show their additions to the program will have a positive affect on road safety -- they include longer class time and extra evaluations.

The childrens' parents are also required to take more ownership.  Parents now have to document the number of hours they spend supervising their child while behind the wheel.

While Cochrane admits MPI is on the right track in terms of improving the quality of driving education, he believes not all students will have the required support from their parents.
