An average number of E. coli infections this year within the central region.

That from medical officer of health Shelley Buchan who reports only eight cases.

All were unrelated although 75 per cent of the infections were realized during the summer months.  Buchan credits that to an increased frequency in consuming ground meat.

Meantime, 2006 is a record year for infections in Winnipeg where over 100 cases were reported.  Buchan links the outbreak to point-source contamination.
