The province's police watchdog is appealing for witnesses in relation to an arrest that took place last month in Portage la Prairie.

The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) says it is investigating the circumstances surrounding the arrest of a 55-year-old male that resulted in him sustaining an injury.

On June 24, the RCMP reported an incident that occurred on May 22 where a male was arrested and subsequently released the following day.

According to the notification, on June 22, the male contacted the RCMP to advise that he sustained an injury to his wrists due to handcuffing. The IIU says that while this injury does not meet the definition of 'serious injury' found in IIU regulation 99/2015, the IIU civilian director has determined it is in the public interest to investigate.

Witnesses or other individuals who have information or video footage that may assist this investigation are asked to contact the IIU toll-free at 1-844-667-6060.
