The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) is looking into an incident involving the arrest of a male youth in Portage la Prairie.

According to the IIU, the RCMP informed them of an incident on July 12 that led to an injury necessitating medical attention. The notification stated that on July 6, at roughly 6:06 p.m., an officer responded to reports of a fight involving two men, possibly with weapons, at the Tupper Street Bridge.

Upon arrival, the officer witnessed several men running from the scene. After giving verbal commands, the officer brought one man to the ground and arrested him when he refused to comply. Following the arrest, the man reported experiencing wrist pain. Subsequently, he was taken by ambulance to the Portage District General Hospital. The civilian director has decided to have the IIU conduct an investigation in the public's interest.

The IIU has asked witnesses or individuals with relevant information or video footage to contact them at 1-844-667-6060.
