A Portage la Prairie Police officer has been charged with a driving offence by The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba.

The charges stem from an IIU investigation after a 33-year-old man was injured during an arrest by a member of the Portage la Prairie RCMP last July.

The civilian director of the IIU believes there are reasonable grounds to believe an offence occurred under the Highway Traffic Act (HTA).

The investigation led to an officer being issued a Provincial Offence Act ticket for driving carelessly contrary to s.188(2) of the HTA.

A news release was issued on September 16, 2019, stating they had launched an investigation.

The issue is before the courts, and the full civilian director’s report on the investigation will be available after charges have been laid.
