The Prairie Pregnancy Support Centre has been in operation for just over a year now.

Executive Director Mary Loewen gives an update about how they've fared since their start.

"It's been so good," says Loewen. "We really have seen, on a number of occasions, times when we thought, 'Okay, should we add another day? Should we be closed a bit over the summer?' Just different thoughts that we've had. It's been proven to us that we are there for a reason and that we are needed here in Portage."

She notes they've seen quite an increase in new clients, with a new baby born.

"We're so thankful for the volunteers that we have. We couldn't do it without them. We're staffed mostly by volunteers - just the two paid staff, myself and the administrative assistant. We are open since the beginning of May."

Loewen outlines their vision.

"We believe that a pregnancy, especially an unintended pregnancy, is a life-changer -- a game-changer," continues Loewen. "And it's our desire that they have all the information they need to make a well-informed decision for themselves and for their children. So, we're there to support them and to talk about the options."

She notes they're thankful for MCC to be the featured charity for this coming Tuesday, from 9:30 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. She says they will set up a display with some board and staff members mingling and helping out where they can. Prairie Pregnancy Support Centre will obtain a set amount of proceeds from that day's sales.  Prairie Pregnancy Support Centre will be present at both the MCC Thrift Shop as well as Portage MCC Furniture Plus. Donations can be dropped off at MCC and saved for the event if labelled specifically for “pregnancy centre."
