Ed Goertzen's performing a solo concert Saturday night at the Glesby Centre's Coffee House in Portage la Prairie. Goertzen says he's getting some help from some others as well.

"It's primarily a solo gig. So, a lot of it's just going to be myself and my guitar. It's pretty simple, and a pretty intimate setting. And then our grade five choir from Arthur Meighen's going to join me in some songs. And I'm also going to do one with my daughter, Rhea. So, I'm pretty excited about that."

He describes what it's like to perform solo.

"It's kind of something that I keep coming back to -- to be a solo artist. I really enjoy playing solo guitar. When I studied jazz it's something that I really focused on. But since I moved on to my own material and doing more songwriting, I find it challenging and also rewarding."

Goertzen notes his inspiration's all around him.

"It comes from just everywhere, really. When I'm writing a song, and I think other songwriters kind of think the same way, you're thinking about it all the time. It's more kind of being observant about things around you. And things kind of present themselves if you're actually paying attention. And for me anyway, once I get onto a song I kind of live with it, so to speak."

He notes the grade five choir runs 20 strong, and halfway through the show they'll join Goertzen for some cover tunes. He adds his daughter Rhea will help sing a song he wrote with her as she plays guitar.

Rhea says, "I'm really nervous. I'm probably going to freak out before I go onstage. I'm just worried I'm going to mess up. But we've been practicing a lot, so I guess it'll be fine. It's really cool, because I really look up to my dad. I think it's really cool how he plays all around Portage and it's really an honour to be able to play at the coffee house."

She says it's a first for her and all her friends will be backstage with her family around her. Rhea adds it might be the beginning of something good.

Goertzen notes it'll be extremely special to him to to see a great crowd for the event, seeing as he's a local musician and singer.
