UPDATE: Mayor Daryl Shipman has confirmed to PortageOnline that there was one fatality in the fire. It's believed close to a dozen apartments were lost, and while there is water and smoke damage to the basement of the Galloway Building, it did survive. Fire crews will likely be on scene for most of the day and they are asking people to avoid the area. The fire started roughly around 1:45 a.m. and Mayor Shipman wants to thank the Plumas and Neepawa volunteer fire crews for coming to help. The investigation continues.

The people of Gladstone are waking up to the tragic news that several heritage buildings in the community have been damaged by fire.

Local reports show the Gladstone Hotel was destroyed, while the firefighters were "able to save the Galloway Building and several apartments connected to it". Crews were called to the fire early Christmas morning and were still on scene shortly after 9 a.m.

People on social media have been thanking those responders battling the cold while trying to save the buildings. The municipality of WestLake-Gladstone has a volunteer fire department.

We will have more on this story in the coming days.
